Installing Update hangs

Jake

When attempting a shut down I am presented with the usual message not to
turn off computer. The System is now hung on "Installing update 1 of 24".
The computer has been in this state for several hours and I have no idea
what to do. I have searched for a solution but have not seen any resolution.
I am using WinXP Pro SP 2 on a 2.8 Ghz System. Can anyone off a safe
solution? What would happen if I turn off at this time?

Thanks.

Jake

Obviously the machine is in a "Hung" state. Turning off the machine will
simply stop the updating process. Reboot and once running go to the
Microsoft Update site. http://update.microsoft.com load ( if necessary )
the latest version of activeX to update your machine. Run the update
scan and choose Express install.

What is the machine's current Service Pack level ? ( Right Click My
Computer & Left Click Properties ).

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
