After installing SP2 on the restart I recieve the
following message:
The application failed to start up because winsrv was not
found. The best solution to this problem is to reinstall
the application.

What is causing this problem and I do I fix it other than
reinstalling XP. Which I have done but everytime I try
to reinstall SP2 I get the same error. I need to install
SP2 so how do I work around this problem?

That error means the 'winsrv.dat' or 'winsrv.dll' file is missing or
corrupt in the Windows\System32 folder, or more likely that
the registry is corrupt.

I have been successful in recovering the system but any
futher attempts to install SP2 ar meet with the same
results. What can I do to get SP2 successfully installed
on this system? The only thing I have thought of so far
is to back up all working files, format, reload XP and
then directly load SP2 but I don't want to go through all
of that if I don't have to or if it woun't work.

I ran into the same problem on one computer, and just gave up on the idea
for now. It was on a laptop with a non-working CDdrive, so the repair
installs weren't pleasant. The problem is allegedly a corrupted registry
hive, but a repair install back to SP1 works just fine and repeated installs
of SP2 fail with the same message.

I'm hoping that an answer other than a clean install will appear. It seems
to be a pretty specific message, so maybe it can be traced to a specific
key. That would be nice.

What about the System File Checker (sfc.exe)?

You read my mind. Get out your XP CD and keep it handy. Start/Run/ type "sfc
/scannow" (less quotes), and click "OK". This will execute (run) the System
File Check Tool with the object of restoring/repairing necessary OS files
utilizing the CD. This should fix any file problem. A corrupted Registry
problem?
