Installing Recovery Console on HD question

H

Hula Baloo

I bought my PC 6 mos ago with Windows XP Home SP1a and subsequently
upgraded it to SP2. Now I'd like to install the Recovery Console on my
HD, but when I go to Start/Run and type in "C:\I386\WINNT32.EXE" per
instructions, I get back an error message saying my system is at a more
current level than the I386 folder on my CD, so Recovery Console can't
be installed. So my question is where do I get the correct files for
installing Recovery console when the ones on my CD won't work? I looked
at Microsoft's Web site, but all I could find was numerous articles
telling me to do what doesn't work in my situation - HELP! TIA

A message indicating the "version of Windows on the system is
newer than the version being installed" will happen if you applied
Service Pack 2 and the CD media you are using to install is pre-SP2.

I would suggest making a new Windows XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed,
then install the Recovery Console or perform a "Repair Install".

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33

Michael,
I appreciate the prompt reply. I'm sure it means something to YOU,
but I'm having trouble deciphering it. There're numerous links here,
and I haven't had any success with any of them so far. I went to the MS
download for SP2, but that's for a 272 MB file I already have, however I
don't know how to extract the ones I would need from it. So then I went
to the Nlite site, clicked "Main server", and it downloaded a file
called "nlite0997bi.exe". Double-clicking on this file doesn't appear
to do ANYTHING, leaving me mucho confused! I searched my boot drive for
"Nlite" but it didn't find anything except the above mentioned file, and
there's no icon on my desktop for it. HELP!!! Thank you.

don't know how to proceed with IT. What am I missing here?
HELP!!! Thank you.

Use AutoStreamer instead...it is easy to use.
You'll need your original Windows XP CD
and your SP2 CD.

AutoStreamer 1.0.33
http://www.wbeta.com/comments.php?shownews=1063&catid=2

If you use AutoStreamer, place the SP2 CD in the drive and
browse to the file "XPSP2.EXE".

The "WINNT32.EXE" file is located in your Windows XP CD.

Thanks. That did it although I did discover that double-clicking on
a .ISO file doesn't work with Nero. I have another machine with Roxio
that works fine, so I'm in business now. Next time I have to format my
HD and reinstall, I can save doing a LOT of downloads! Even tho I have
4 Mb/sec download speed, it'll still save time and effort. Thanks again.
