Installing plug and play storage devices

Anthony

On my kids laptops running windows XP home I am unable to connect any usb or
pcmcia storage devices that install without drivers on my laptop with xp pro
and my wifes desktop with xp home. The install hardware wizard does not find
the standard microsoft drivers which are as follows on my laptop

device type: Disk Drives
Manufacturer: (Standard disk drives)

disk.sys
PartMgr.sys
snapman.sys

indeed on the kids laptops if I choose to find the driver myself and use the
hardware wizard there are none of the standard manufacturer/microsoft
drivers listed and if I click on any items there like disk drives it just
says [unable to find any drivers for this device]

all pc's are Sony Vaios.

Any hints please?

Unplug all the USB and PC card devices. Download and
install SP1 if you have not already done so.
Open device manager and remove the USB ports and hubs and
PCMCIA ports. REBOOT. The ports should be redetected as
"new" and the drivers installed. Plug you devices in one at
a time and they should be installed with the proper drivers.
