installing fax component

I am trying to install the fax component of windows xp and it tells me to install the windows xp home edition service pack 1 cd but the only disc i got with the system is windows xp home edition. (not service pack 1). When i insert the disc and click ok nothing happens.Any clues on how to fix this problem.

I'm not sure what you mean, I typed in service pack files\i386 but still tells me to install windows xp home edition service pack disc. I have downloaded sp1 from microsoft site and applied it. What now?

So what was your installation medium for Windows XP and SP1?

That is all you may need. Open the add/remove programs
from control panel, choose the icon to add/remove windows
components, and under 'communications' is an option for
"microsoft fax". Check that item off. Click on OK, to close
the wizard and install the fax program. Of coarse, you can
also install a Third party faxing program, of which the
current champ is Winfax (symantec).

I have tried exactly what you said and it tells me that some files are missing, need to install windows xp home edition service pack cd, which i do, and nothing happens.

Is there a XP sercice pack 1 CD that i should have? or can i download the service pack files again.
I remember doing a system restore a couple of weeks after downloading critical updates, would this be the reason why the \i386 folder is empty?
Should i throw the f#*^ing thing of the pier?

No idea. This is not a fax issue. It's an OS installation issue. It's never
been reported in this group. You might ask in one of the OS or installation
groups.

If you did a system restore then that is a no brainer for it rolls back to
before you downloaded critical updates, expecially if Service Pack 1 was one
of them. Do you understand what roll back means?????? Try going to
Microsoft windows update and it will search your system to see what updates
have been installed. And try Russ's suggestion of the proper newsgroup.

Mines are in the folder refered to but the same "Open" windows keep on reapearing... asking for the file that is there... if I skip; another file is ask for forever...
