I get an "access denied" error when trying to install my printer. Windows
vista automatically detects the printer and finds the drivers on my hard
drive (i downloaded the Vista drivers for this printer from Canons website)
but fails to install the drivers with the reason "access denied". I am
logged on the computer with the Administrative profile that ships with the
OS. I am not prompted for a password and running the installation files
using the right click - admin fails as well. I have seen this question a
thousand times on the web but have as of yet not seen a solution to the
problem. Please help

Have you tried temporarily turning off UAC? If not, go to Control Panel,
open User Accounts, click "Turn user account control on or off," turn it
off, then try installing. Once installation is complete you can turn UAC on
again.

If that fails, have you tried contacting Canon tech support or checked their
site for known issue or troubleshooting tips that might cover this
situation.

Hi - Thanks for the response. UAT was disabled but made no difference. The
driver is one of the newest for the printer - I have even tried to install a
similar printer driver that shipped with Vista and this failed as well
stating "access denied". Any other ideas?

When you try to install, is the USB cable connected or disconnected. If
connected, disconnect, reboot the system and try installing the drivers
again. If that fails, check the troubleshooting section, assuming they have
one, at the Canon website, likely under support and if that reveals nothing,
I'd call Canon tech support.

You might also want to try this question on the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan newsgroup.
