Ok, here's what you can do.
This sounds weird, but I've been busting my butt to figure this out
because I had the EXACT same issue for a long time before I figured it
out, and hopefully I can get the word out.
Short story: Trick XP into using a generic Windows 98SE driver.
Reason: Windows XP actually doesn't come with a GENERIC reader driver
for any format. So if yo'ure like me and you bough generic, windows
can't figure out what it is, you're screwed.
Long Story:
First things first, at least this time.... put the card in your reader
and plug it into the computer. when it prompts you to install the
software, just click cancel and let it complain.
Then you're gonna go to THIS site:
http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=sSlot
I know you may say, "hey, but I don't have a pny reader." Doesn't
matter. you want the generic driver.
You're gonna download the driver.zip for the USB Memory Stick card
reader for USB 1.1 the one in the middle second row. NOT THE USB 2.0.
Even if your reader is 2.0 use the 1.1 driver it'll still utilize 2.0.
Run the setup program, do NOT restart your computer.
Next, right click on My Computer, select Properties, click the hardware
tab, click Device Manager, find the unknown device entitled 'USB MS Card
Reader' or something to that effect. Right click that, then select
update driver.
You'll get the install screen again. You want to choose your own
location for search, then in the next screen you want to select the
driver yourself. You'll then be presented with a tremendously long
list of device catagories. You'll just select "ANY". when you click
next, you'll be suprised to see the generic driver alone and staring
you in the face. Install this driver. XP will bitch that it's not
WHQL certified, but continue anyway. The second that finishes, XP will
detect the reader and mount the volume, you'll have a fresh new driver
letter in My computer.
Voila! It's a bitch, I know. But it works great!
Hope that helps. Peace!
