Installing card reader

del siemejr

I have a card reader that installed as plug and play on a
machine with Windows ME. When I plug it into a machine
with XP, it recognizes the card as a USB MS card reader,
but it can't find a driver. The card did not come with
drivers.

Does the card reader work? (I'd expect it to work.)

I've used two USB flash memory readers in XP. Neither required drivers other
than the ones included with XP.

The card reader works fine on the other machine.

Ok, here's what you can do.

This sounds weird, but I've been busting my butt to figure this ou
because I had the EXACT same issue for a long time before I figured i
out, and hopefully I can get the word out.

Short story: Trick XP into using a generic Windows 98SE driver.

Reason: Windows XP actually doesn't come with a GENERIC reader drive
for any format. So if yo'ure like me and you bough generic, window
can't figure out what it is, you're screwed.

Long Story:

First things first, at least this time.... put the card in your reade
and plug it into the computer. when it prompts you to install th
software, just click cancel and let it complain.

Then you're gonna go to THIS site:
http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=sSlot
I know you may say, "hey, but I don't have a pny reader." Doesn'
matter. you want the generic driver.

You're gonna download the driver.zip for the USB Memory Stick car
reader for USB 1.1 the one in the middle second row. NOT THE USB 2.0
Even if your reader is 2.0 use the 1.1 driver it'll still utilize 2.0.

Run the setup program, do NOT restart your computer.

Next, right click on My Computer, select Properties, click the hardwar
tab, click Device Manager, find the unknown device entitled 'USB MS Car
Reader' or something to that effect. Right click that, then selec
update driver.

You'll get the install screen again. You want to choose your ow
location for search, then in the next screen you want to select th
driver yourself. You'll then be presented with a tremendously lon
list of device catagories. You'll just select "ANY". when you clic
next, you'll be suprised to see the generic driver alone and starin
you in the face. Install this driver. XP will bitch that it's no
WHQL certified, but continue anyway. The second that finishes, XP wil
detect the reader and mount the volume, you'll have a fresh new drive
letter in My computer.

Voila! It's a bitch, I know. But it works great!

Hope that helps. Peace
