My situation is unusual. I bought a laptop over the
internet with a pirated version of windows xp on it. I am
told that, since I do not have either the original
operating system that was installed on the laptop or a
valid windows xp cd, I will have to buy and install a full
windows xp version, not an upgrade. Okay, since there are
other problems with this laptop besides the operating
system, I am protesting the charges with my credit card
company. If the credit card settlement is a full refund,
then I must be prepared to return the laptop.

My question is: can I uninstall windows xp off this laptop
and use the windows xp cd to install on another laptop
since I will be the legal owner of this copy of windows
xp? Thanks.

I don't quite understand your question? If you have to return the laptop,
why would it matter that you uninstall XP.

Hi, Carroll,

You can only install XP on one machine. I would imagine, however, that if
the installation has not yet been activated you can go right ahead. Once you
haver activated, then changing to another computer is a problem. You can
telephone Micorosfof for help on this.

Hope this helps.

Make sure you get the retail version, OEM versions are tied to the original
computer they are installed.
So retail yes, OEM no.
