installing a non-English version of XP over English XP??

I don't know anything about XP, and don't use XP myself, but I am
getting too harassed by this client about his preoccupation with it,
that I need to seek help somewhere. This client wants to buy a
notebook here in North America that comes with English XP, but then he
wants to install Chinese XP over it? Is that possible. If the notebook
is purchased from DELL, I thought it may actually be "dangerous" to
even change the OS? Any help is appreciated.

You can install a foreign language version over the existing XP ONLY if you
do a clean install and wipe the harddrive first. Also, it's unlikely that
the retail XP license he buys will have all the correct drivers for the
laptop but they should be available from the Dell site. He may also have
issues with his keyboard...

Personally, I'd have thought he could get a laptop in China for a lot less
than the US

HI,

As was mentioned, he would have to format and clean install the Chinese
version. He would also need to locate drivers for the hardware used in the
laptop *before* doing this. One other note: It is highly likely that Dell
will void his warranty for changing the preinstalled OS, so he should make
no expectations of support. He may be better off contacting Dell directly
about getting the Chinese language version preinstalled (I do not know if
they will do this, but it's worth asking).
