I have tried to upgrade my grahics card from the ati onboard to an nvidia pci
express but windows won't recognise that any new hardware has been added and
insists that only the ati exists. I have tried to install the drivers for my
new card but setup won't let me saying that I have no hardware matching the
drivers I'm trying to install - caught between a rock & a hard place!

You will need to go into the BIOS and change Display Adaptors from
'Onboard' to 'PEG' or 'PCI Express'

Check with the motherboard manufacturer re compatibility with the new video
card.. the days when you could more or less fit any card to any board are
gone, especially where a motherboard has integrated graphics..
