installing 2000 on xp laptop

I have a 1 year old gateway laptop with XP home edition. My
boss recently offered to pay for the Siemens S7 software
for my laptop so I can so I can use it at work. Our plant
is setup on Windows 2000 and the Siemens S7 software for XP
is a later version than what we have running. There are
some diffeences in the versions and our technical director
does not want anyone running any other version than what is
there now.
I have purchased a full copy of Windows 2000 but I am
having second thoughts. I talked to gateway about putting
the XP back on my laptop if I wanted to at a later date and
they were not real sure that would be possible. Will
formatting a hard drive and installing an operating system
change anything that would prevent me from reinstalling XP?
All the software involved is licenced.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you have access to all the necessary
Windows 2000 and XP drivers.
