Installed Zone Alarm: Internet Connection Sharing not working

G

Gregg Cattanach

I disabled the WindowsXP Firewall and have installed ZoneAlarm on both my
desktop and laptop machines. I can ping and share files between the two
machines, but Internet connection sharing isn't working. The desktop
connects to the Internet via dial-up, and when connected I even see the icon
on the laptop in the tray for the Internet Gateway dialup connection, but I
can't access any website from the laptop. When I try to it prompts for a
phone number to dial-out with the modem. I've tried rerunning the Network
Setup Wizard on both machines to no avail.

I'm guessing there is something else I need to set in ZoneAlarm, but I don't
know what.

This is just a simple wired network through a router.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

MORE: I tried uninstalling ZoneAlarm on the laptop and it still won't
access the Internet. I still see the 'Internet Gateway' icon and that
shared connection is listed in Network Connections and shows as connected.

I've rerun the Network Connection Wizard, but still no dice. Something in
Windows changed. I guess, when I installed ZoneAlarm but I don't know what.

Again, any help is appreciated.

Last note: I first installed ZA on the laptop and it connected to the
Internet fine. When I then added ZA to the desktop THAT's when the trouble
started. So I'm thinking that ZA on the desktop needs to be configured
somehow to accept the Internet requests from the laptop through the shared
Internet connection.

First shutdown ZA and then try, That will indicate whether ZA is af
fault.

Make sure never dial a connection is set on the laptop.

Why are you cross posting to the world? Why is a Windows machine the gateway
device for the LAN and WAN it seems and you have a router sitting there
that seems to be a switch on the network? They do make dial-up routers
D-Link and SMC make them. You can then make the dial-up router the gateway
device for the LAN and WAN and you use ZA on each machine to supplement the
router. It's a simple configuration I would think. It would be a solution
that would make things easier on the ICS connections on the LAN setup,
allows the machines to access the WAN without the need of a gateway
computer and is better protection from the Internet for your home network
setup.

Make sure the ip address of the laptop is added to the trusted zone.

It's a lot better than putting separate posts in each newsgroup.

Why did _you_ cross post to the world? And, are _you_ the usenet police?

It may be just needing to adding your internal addresses to the Zones in
the Firewall tab in ZoneAlarm's control panel. I don't use the Internet
Gateway option but I'm thinking that Zone Alarm installed you the
desktop is set up with only the zone for the address that you got from
your dialup provider.

If I was talking to you that would be one thing, I am not talking to you so
why are you here?

If you're using the free version of Zone Alarm I don't think it supports
ICS.

That sounds like the right idea, but I'm still not exactly sure what you are
suggesting. What are "the internal addresses" you are referring to? The
two IP address assigned to each machine are already there. Remember I sad
that file sharing works just fine between the two machines.

Every one of the groups I posted to are completely on topic for this
question. This is completely appropriate Usenet usage. And there is no
reason I need to buy any more hardware. ICS has worked perfectly the way I
have it set up in the past; there is just something in ZA that I need to
change to make this work. The router is simple there to connect the two
machines. One machine does the work to connect to the Internet.

With a good firewall in place there is nothing wrong with the way I have it
configured. I just need some tweak to ZA to keep the requests from the
laptop from being blocked by ZA running on the desktop.

Just because /you/ need to mouth the words as you type does not mean you're
'talking' to anyone. Do you have other disabilities too?

I know just what to do with the Relic. It's the same thing that happened to
the Relic monstor in that movie the The Relic that was out in the mid 90's.

Wrong ....

3 groups is considered max, and these should be closely related.

The groups concerning XP are not related, as i doubt very much the issue
lies with XP, but with Zone Alarm itself.

The networking group is questionable, as the OP appears not to be having
network issues, merely program issues not being set by the firewall.

Hope you don't mind being corrected, but on this occasion, i felt it
justified.

It turns out that Zone Alarm Free version doesn't support ICS but Zone Alarm
Pro does. Too bad all you ijits wasted all your time worrying about a 4
group cross-post. Thanks for ALL your help.

Don't get upset because *you* got it wrong sunshine, take a deep breath

Sulking and acting like a complete ****wit doesn't improve your

Gregg, there was only a single ijit; only Duane was upset with you.

I prefer the kind of cross-post you made over finding stand-alone posts from
you in each group (as I said).
