Installed Xp Home Edition over XP SP1, Fatal error

L

Lisa

I bought the upgrade version of Windows XP Home Edition
2003 for my father-in-law (lives 500 miles away) and sent
it to him. Then remembered his computer might not have
enough space for the upgrade. He doesn't know that much
about computers. I called and he told me he had Windows
XP Service pack 1 on I think an IBM 386. I told him not
to install it that he didn't have enough space but he did
it anyway. Now when he boots up it acts like its going
to start gets a blue screen and then gets an error
message saying ... fatal error has occurred. He tried
the hotfix but it didn't work. He does not have Windows
XP Service pack 1 on a disk. Is there anything we can do
or does he need a new disk to reinstall and what version
of XP would be appropiate?
Thanks for your help

Windows XP cannot operate on a 386 (or even a 486), IBM or not. The minimum
requirements for XP are:
Pentium II 233mhz
128MB ram
4 gig minimum system space, w/space for applications and data:

I recommend a 20gig HD, at the very minimum.

But that is irrelevant: His computer is just not sufficient to run XP.
Let's face it, if he wants to run XP (either Home or Pro), he needs a NEW
COMPUTER, not "workarounds and fixes" or a "new HD". A 386/486 can't even
RECOGNISE the size of HD he needs.

Considering that he can get a new Pentium 4, with all he needs to run XP,
for $500-600 from Dell, perhaps he needs to junk the old 386. I'm sure
there are people around who can safely destroy it.

XP Home on a 386???!!!! Boy! He sure will need to have a
LOT of time on HIS hands. It might only take forever to
boot up, let alone do any actual work.

First of all, note that there is no product called "Windows XP
Home Edition 2003." Did you buy Windows XP Home Edition or did
you buy Windows Server 2003?

for my father-in-law (lives 500 miles away) and sent
it to him. Then remembered his computer might not have
enough space for the upgrade. He doesn't know that much
about computers. I called and he told me he had Windows
XP Service pack 1

If he already has Windows XP, what are you trying to accomplish?
He certainly doesn't need to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows
XP, and based on how you describe him, he almost certainly
doesn't need Server 2003.

on I think an IBM 386.

You are clearly mistaken, if he's running XP Home. A 386 is an
extremely old computer. It won't run Windows XP Home, Windows
Server 2003, or any other version of Window except very old ones.

I told him not
to install it that he didn't have enough space but he did
it anyway. Now when he boots up

He either had space to install it or he didn't. If he didn't have
the space, the installation would have failed. If he managed to
install it, he had the space.

it acts like its going
to start gets a blue screen and then gets an error
message saying ... fatal error has occurred. He tried
the hotfix but it didn't work.

What hotfix?

He does not have Windows
XP Service pack 1 on a disk. Is there anything we can do
or does he need a new disk to reinstall and what version
of XP would be appropiate?

It's almost impossible to answer your questions, since the facts
are so badly confused. Please clarify exactly what hardware he
has, what operating system he started with, what you sent him,
exactly what he did, and what the results were. Once you've done
that, someone here can probably help you.

My father-in-law is a real lay person when it comes to
computers. I just remembered he had a virus and called
MSN for help and his computer didn't work rigt after that.
He has enough room for Windows XP Service Pack 1 which
was installed serveral years ago. I didn't realized that
until I bought just the upgrade version of Windows 2003
XP Home Edition, Service pack 1, English. I have Windows
2003 XP Home Edition, Service pack 1, English 2002. I can
get some adive from a tech at work but he/they don't know
that much about XP. I can do some things with guidanc,
but I am not an expert. I can follow instructions. Again,
do we need to buy a new disk (he doesn't have one) for
his computer, and what should we get? Since it say a fatal
error has occurred, do we need to delete everything off
his computer and start over?
I know I seem like an idiot, but any help would be
appreciated.

People have tried to help you. There have been numerous responses to
your post and apparently you don't get it.

THERE IS NO PRODUCT CALLED WINDOWS XP HOME 2003 EDITION!!!!!!

WINDOWS XP WILL NOT RUN ON A 386!!!!!!

STOP TROLLING!!!!!!

If you really want help, then take a breath, READ the responses and act
acordingly. Stop asking for help if you don't or can't accept it.

Lisa, are you trying to solve the virus problem by buying a fresh copy of
Windows?
Are you ready to give up on the virus and spend a bunch of money on a new
Window XP?
If the symptoms of the virus can be reported on this forum, you won't have
to buy anything. The Fatal Error doesn't mean much. I have had a lot of them
on Windows 98; it only means a program couldn't continue running, I think.
If you want to give him a brand-new XP, it is like trashing your car because
the upholstery is bad! And, without a disk, he does need to buy a whole new
XP if you go that route.
Get him to post, or visit him and post what you see on his computer when it
malfunctions.
Let me know if I didn't accurately comprehend what you have told us here.

D

Dana

Lisa, don't mind him. He is not reading your posts. We know your
father-in-law bought his machine with XP pre-installed, correct?

Ok so im a joke. All I wanted was some help but some of
you people continue to down grade me. I've had 1 that was
helpful. So much for everyone else's understanding. This
is not the best when asking for support.
Thanks for your support.

Lisa, just answer the 5 questions Ken Blake asked; starting from "Please
clarify exactly what.....". And check your facts with your father-in-law
first.

Lisa, I took the trouble to identify several areas of your post
that didn't make sense, and asked you to clarify exactly what you
meant, and answer several spoecific questions. Please take the
trouble to do so. If you don't, neither I nor anyone else can
help you.

Nobody can answer that until they understand what you're trying
to ask.

Sounds to me like your Father-in-law and you are the same person.
If you ****ed it up just say so, we don't care.....if you are going at
this blind then you are headed for more troubles than it is worth.
If you(he) has a 386......man that's an old one.......good for a
paperweight tho.......................

Sorry but this statement is wrong
THERE IS NO PRODUCT CALLED WINDOWS XP HOME 2003 EDITION!!!!!!

If you go to CompUSA or wherever here in the Denver CO area, the front
of the boxes on the shelve do show Windows XP Home 2003. The 2003 is in
smaller print below the rest of the title. I never noticed it until
about a week ago. It might have been just recent shipments that are
marked this way but they are now.

Well if that is the case, and I'm not saying your wrong, where's it
located? My CompUSA doesn't have that edition. And more importantly
there is absolutly no information about this new 2003 version of Xp on
any of the following:

MSN
MS General Site
MS XP Site
Google
MS Knowledge Base
Yahoo!
Altavista

Now if none of those sites make any reference at all to this new
version, I can only image it doesn't exist. But hey what do I know.
Maybe MS has totaly change their business perspective. Bill made over 3
billion last year, I guess you think he said "enough is enough, I don't
need any more"and "We will make and sell products that we don't list,
support, or advertise."

Like I said, I'm not saying your a liar. The box may have on 2003
printed on it somewhere. But that doesn't make it a new version of XP.
Maybe, let me guess, that was when that packaging was produced.

Also there is a MS windows product with 2003 in the title. Windows
Server 2003. Maybe that's what her dad has, but that's a different
animal entirely. All anyone before me ask of her was for clarification,
she only responded with the same rediculas email.

Dana

For sure, "XP 2003" is old wine in new bottles. We KNOW her dad didn't have
the server version!
Basically, I believe she was trying to help her f-i-l "get over" a virus! By
buying a new copy of the operating system! Because she didn't know what else
to do, and perhaps was trying to ingratiate herself with him. And we can be
sure that she is not the first to go that route! There are probably a lot of
computers sitting around unused because they have viruses, and non-technical
people without big bucks don't know what to do.
Some might call it "thinning the herd."

The latest WinXP Home (retail) is Version 2002 (includes SP1)
