The difference between WinXP Home and WinXP Pro is
almost invisible to the untrained eye. What is it that your
father in law objects to?

Regardless of this, to revert to WinXP Home requires AFAIK
a full re-installation.

Yes, I need to persuade him there is no real difference for the times he uses
it,
Another qu. though, his original version of xp home, can it be installed on
another computer and registered with another person

No. You cannot install Windows XP Home Edition on a different
computer if you upgraded it to Windows XP Professional. That
license is now part of the Windows XP Professional license since
it formed the basis for the upgrade.

Something is very strange about that statement. What doesn't he like? .
There are essentially no changes. There are some extra features, but if he
doesn't need to use them he won't even see them.

He may not need Professional instead of Home, but it can't hurt him to have
it.

No, you can't change back. Downgrades are never supported. The only way to
get to Home to by backing up your files, installing XP Home cleanly, then
restoring your files.
