XP Home upgrade

I have a customer with an illegal copy of xp home on his computer. I told him
to go buy a genuine copy of xp home upgrade to install so he would be legal.
When he tries to install the upgrade it installs fine up to the point when it
asks for the product key. It will not take the new, genuine, product key.
Only the old one that was given to him by the person that sold him the
computer. Is the full install the only way to do this? He wants to keep all
his information stored on the machine.

If you boot from the new CD and follow the installation procedure (you will
need qualifying media to use the upgrade version of XP Home) the new key
should work.

You need to perform a "Repair Install"
using the new Windows XP CD and
Product Key.
