Installed SP2, and now computer restarts repeatedly

I have a computer that hasn't been online in a while, so it had the original
xp installation. I went through all the updates, and finally the sp2 update.
It downloaded fine and called for a restart. I did it, and now it just
restarts over and over. Just as it moves from the XP graphic before the login
screen comes up, it shuts down completely and restarts. How can I access the
computer to fix this issue during one of the restarts?

Two threads is NOT better than one thread.

boot up with your
winxp cd and access
the repair/recovery console.

then run the following
commands at the disk prompt>:

chkdsk
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild
fixmbr

then "exit" and
retry your boot.

I know. I didn't realize the first one went through. My computer sat there
like nothing happened. Sorry.

I can't locate my cd. Do I have to get a new copy? If I had it, I'm pretty
sure I could follow these instructions. I've tried a few other fixes like
restarting in safe mode to work around, but it won't even restart in safe
mode.

Same as if you'd mailed a letter?

you can borrow
a win xp cd from
someone else, as
the repair console
is system friendly.

A copy of the Stop Error report would be helpful.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Hope this helps.
