installed font won't display

I followed the instructions to install a new font, and everything seemed to
be successful. But in Microsoft Word, a rectangle appears for every letter
(instead of the letter in its new font). The printer also prints out a
rectangle for each letter. I even re-booted. How do I get the new font to
work?
