Installation problem

I recently brought a hp destjet f4140 all-in-one printer, scanner and copier.
I can't get through the installation without getting the error message usb
print version 5.1.2600.0 is missing or installed improperly. I can't find
this file anywhere and believe me I have looked. Is there a way I can
download this file on to my computer or where can I get. Please help I'm at
my wits end.

Did you install the hp software first, before connecting the printer?

Do you have, or did you have, any other printers connected via USB? If
you do have other USB printers, do they still work?

You also need to be a bit more precise in reporting the error message.
Is the missing file usbprint.sys or usbprint.inf? When you say you
can't find it, do you mean you can't find any file with that name or you
can't find one that's version 5.1.2600.0? That version sounds like the
original version, which is long gone -- if you've been doing the right
thing and have your system up-to-date with service pack 2 and other MS
updates -- and I really doubt that hp requires such an old version.

I use to have the original printer that came with the computer. A compaq
IJ650 series, but that stop working after I upgrade to windows xp sp2. So
that is why I got this hp deskjet F4140. HP support talk about usbprint.sys
or usbstor.sys and I saw both of those when I access the folder/file. But I
don't know how to activate them.

When I try to install the printer from the CD. It install halfway and then I
get the message:
This file does not exist or is the incorrect version and is required for
installation to continue. This file is a part of Windows and is provided on
windows installation CD.
Issue: USBPrint
I have installed all the high priority updates and the optional ones but I
can't get pass the halfway point on this CD-ROM installation.

Uninstall all the printer software and disconnect the printer from the PC.

Go into the Device Manager, scroll down to the USB entries. Right click on
each and select Uninstall.

Reboot the PC. XP should reinstall the USB controllers and ports.

Then try again.

At this point, your options are limited.

Telephone hp support and ask them why their installation CD is
requesting an obsolete version of a Windows file. I really think you
should do this before you replace a newer usbprint.sys file with an old
version.

If you have usbprint.sys (newer version) on your hard drive, I suggest
saving it under a different name (usbprint.sys.bak) before copying the
old version.

To get the original version of the file, if you have an original WinXP
CD (not sp1 or sp2), you should be able to find and extract it from
there. It probably will be called usbprint.sy_ and will need to be
extracted using the "expand" command: http://www.winxptutor.com/expand.htm

If you don't have an original WinXP CD, you can get usbprint.sys ver.
