Hi, I am trying to install a licensed copy of win xp pro. i am currently
running win xp media center. when i enter in the product key, it says it's
invalid, yet when i tried to install it in place of win2k (full reinstall) it
works (but i didn't install it on the win2k machine).

has anyone had this problem?
i tried to have it boot up from the cd, but it will not install because my
hard drive is SATA

why cannot i install win xp pro to replace win xp media, yet when i test it
on win2 to install, it works? thanks. dr. p

An upgrade from Windows XP Media Center to
Windows XP Professional is not supported.
A clean install is required. You must use the
Windows XP Pro Product Key with the XP Pro CD.

Hi Carey, thanks for your reply. I attempted to install xp pro and entered
in a valid product key, it kept saying it is invalid. When I tested in on a
machine with win2k, it was valid. This means that I cannot install a clean
xp pro with a machine that has xp media center. I cannot boot from the xp
pro cd, because the drive is SATA and it doesn't recognize that drive (needs
IDE for cd to reconize hard drive). What should I do?

I am not doing an upgrade but full install. Thanks. We are on a timeframe
trying to get this machine up. Thanks so much! Dr. P.

Media Center is a superset of XP Pro. Why do you want to downgrade?

:

When booting from the CD for the clean install press F6 when it displays
the message to load the Sata Drivers. Have them available on floppy.
After pressing F6 it will later ask for the floppy.

Hi Rock, thanks for this info. This system didn't come with a floppy drive.
What else could I do. I do not believe I have the drivers for it. Thanks
Rock.

That's the only way, as far as I know. The drivers have to be loaded
from a floppy. You'll need to get an external drive. Go to the
computer vendor's tech support site to get the drivers.
