You would need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional,
then proceed with a "clean install".

As XP MCE is considered a "souped up" version of XP Pro, I find it difficult
to believe MCE won't work. At any rate, the only way to install Pro on that
machine would be to format the hard drive, and start a fresh install of XP
Pro.

Or you could install XP Pro in a separate partition as a dual boot with MCE.
Either way it has to be a clean install.

Yes, if you do a clean installation. No, any other way.

But just what is this "major conflict"? The only possible issue is that
Media CenterEdition won't let you join a domain. Unless you need to do that
(which is possible), there shouldn't be any conflict.

Depends on whether the drivers for all the devices are on the installation
CD. Best is to go to the PC manufacturer's tech support site and look
for/download the XP specific drivers. Burn to CD.

How long ago was "just purchased"? If it was very recent then you
should contact the vendor, explain the situation to them, and see if
any sort of an exchange is possible. Another possibility would be to
contact the computer manufacturer direct and see if they can offer you
any assistance.

There is actually very little difference between Windows XP MCE and
Windows XP Pro except for the ability to join a Windows Server domain.
So if your application software has problems with MCE it is quite
possible that it will have the same problems with XP Pro on that
hardware.

One further consideration is that if you do install XP Pro then you
might find that your warranty on the computer may be considered null
and void because of the operating system switch. With OEM versions
the computer + the operating system are considered to be a "package
deal".

Good luck
