Installation of Windows Defender

I have several major problems with Windows Defender. Firstly, when I tried
to download I received the following Installation Error: " The wazard was
interrupted before Windows Defender could be completely installed. Your
system has not been modified." Secondly, while using Windows Explorer I
found the program 4 different places. When I click on them they take me to
the Home Page of Defender. Thirdly, the Home Page tells me that I haven't
updated Defender in 14 days. When I check for updates it tells me that there
are no new definitions or engine updates. Fourthly, I went to "Add/Remove
Programs". I was going to remove Defender and try redownloading it. It's
not listed. Each morning I found the following error message on my screen:
"Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x8050800f. An unexpected problem
occured. Install any available updates, and try to start the program again".
I have done this but am told there are no new definitions or engine updates.

Any ideas on what I've done during the installation process to encounter all
these problems. I'm sure I'm the problem but would appreciate any help in
straightening out my delema. CRAZY for help.

What version of Windows is this on?

I see the error message you mention, ending in 00f, on one Windows 2000
server install daily. I ignore it, it seems to have no ill effects--i.e.
real time protection and scheduled scans and updates all seem to be working
fine.

With regard to updates: What kind of a network is this installed on? Is it
a managed corporate lan, where autoupdate goes to a SUS or WSUS server? If
so, the WSUS administrator needs to enable the new class of updates for
Windows Defender. If SUS is all that is available, automatic updates will
not work--SUS has an end of life of december, 2006.

Windows Update should give you updates for Windows Defender--and it would be
interesting to know whether it recognizes that the product is installed?

I would recommend that you download and install the Windows Installer
cleanup tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Once this is installed, run it from the Start, all programs. You should see
Windows defender and the definitions listed--I would remove the installer
bits for both.

Then I would reinstall Windows Defender.

Even if your intention is to remove it--I'd do the install so that you can
then do a proper uninstall.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. My network
only consists of this computer and one other in the home. Will try your
recommendations. Thanks

Well Bill, just tried your recommendations and get the same ol' stuff. Error
messages are the same. Defender never finishes downloading. Never had this
problem with downloading any other Microsoft updates. Beta 1 worked fine.
Really puzzled at the results of this one.

I have the same update errors on two workstations that I have tried. We are
using SUS on a Win 2000 Server. Going to Windows Updates as Administrator on
the workstation doesn't seem to help either. Do I have to update to WSUS?
Can I do it on Windows 2000 Server? Beta 1 was great. Beta 2 has been a
hassle.
