Installation hangs 1/4 of the way

Installing hangs about 1/4 the way through the progress bar. Have let it sit
there for an hour and no more progress. Windows XP Pro w/ service pack 2.
Tried several reboots, restart the installations, blah blah.... always hangs in
the same 1/4 of the way spot on the progress bar.
Any clues anybody?

I saw one report earlier of this same sort of behavior. I think he said it
continued after 37 minutes, though.

My thought would be to try the install in safe mode--see if that eliminates
some process which is interfering.
