Hangs on install

Nigel

I am running XPPro with sp2

Hangs about a 1/4 the way through the installation.

Have tried disabling all security measures but still will
not install.

But judging from the posts here I have had a lucky escape.

In order to judge from posts here, you need to have some perspective.

I heard on Security 360 today that there were 3,000,000 downloads of
Microsoft Antispyware--didn't record the time period--but early on. There
have been about 7,155 messages in these groups.

So--the propoprtion of people with serious issues is quite small, I believe.
If you call Microsoft or write to the Giant alias, you are sent here. The
URL for the HTTP interface to these groups is in Help, About on the product,
and prominent at the download page. So--I think folks know where to come.

I'm not denying the issues that are posted here--they are real, some are
serious, and some involve bugs which can be fixed. But this is not a large
proportion of folks having a bad experience.

Hi Nigel - Try doing a "Clean Boot", log on as Adminstrator and then doing
the install:

Clean Boot - General Win2k(if w/msconfig)/XP procedure, but see below for
links for other OS's:
1. Start|Run enter msconfig.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Process
System.ini File, Process Win.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes.
Leave the boot.ini boxes however they are currently set.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and then reboot.

O.K finally got it to install and to my delight it works
fine. No issues with iis, mcafee anti-virus or anything
so far.

To install it I had to reinstall Microsofts little 'Spy'
Windows Authentication ActiveX thing.

On first impressions it seems like it is doing a good job
of detecting and dealing with Spyware.

But it was a pain to install.

So I take it that the "Genuine Windows" verification piece of the download
isn't your favorite thing in the world?

I doubt anybody disagrees--otoh, the process of getting verified is supposed
to be a one-time process--you then need to download the control again for
each download, but it should spot the fact that you are already verified and
just to on. Or, of course, at the moment, you can skip that whole process
and get the download anyway. This mechanism is intended to combat a
substantial piracy issue.
