Application "hangs" while installing

I have downloaded and installed the Microsoft Antispyware.
When I go to install other applications, during the
install it simply "hangs" and stop responding. It even
does the same when I shutdown the AntiSpyware. Also, when
I end the installation task and reboot my computer, it
simply hangs for a while. When I reboot, I simply get a
blank desktop with no Start menu or icons. It will simply
hang there for 5 - 10 minutes before it finally continues.
I just simply uninstalled antispy in hopes that I can
install my other application normally. I am using Windows
XP Professional with SP 2. And have all critical updates
installed. The installs I have done so far, that "hanged"
were: Microsoft Visio 2003 Professional, and Microsoft
Project 2003 Standard Evaluation Edition.

Ensure that no programs are running during installations including utilities
such as your Antivirus.

Keep us posted?

I take it that the uninstall of Microsoft Antispyware proceeded normally,
and was apparently successful?
