Installation failure

I receive an error message that says 'cannot write to
Temporary file" at beginning of upgrade process from 98
to XP. My hard drive is about 60% full and scan disk says
it is okay. I'm doing an upgrade so that I don't lose my
old files. Would a clean instal from the upgrade disk
work? Any suggestions?

John,

Make sure that the system will handle XP. I recommend that you run the MS
WinXP Upgrade Advisor BEFORE attempting to upgrade your system. It will
identify any anticipated problem areas that you'd need to address prior to
successfully upgrading to WinXP.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
to get this free utility.

Then once you've addressed any issues that come up with the utility, proceed
with any plans to upgrade to WinXP.

A clean install is always best, BUT you WILL lose everything on the HDD.
Backup all data, files, etc. that you want to save. Use CD, DVD, Jaz, Zip,
tape, spare HDD, etc. to back up your data first. Then do a clean install
from booting with the WinXP CD. When you are done, copy back your data to
the HDD and re-install all your programs.
