I've a possible fix for this issue, but it hasn't worked for some of the
people posting the error:

1) Uninstall WD thru Add and Remove Programs

2) Launch cmd prompt

3) MsiExec.exe /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

4) Delete all contents of Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates

5) Reinstall WD

Let me know if that works for you.

Did the msiexec line work without an error message?

OK I think I need to ditch that old cut and paste--looks like that is a
solution in search of a problem--it doesn't work! Sorry for the bum steer.

Can you update by going to WindowsUpdate or MicrosoftUpdate? I believe one
user reported that subsequent to a successful update via WU, the autoupdate
function worked fine.

Rob,

Show hidden files, folders, and system files :

If the update was obtained via Windows Update, navigate to the
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.
Is there an Install folder present ?

Also, navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution and open the
ReportingEvents.log with Notepad. Scroll down to the bottom for the most
recent entry. It will look similar to this :

following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. To install
the updates, an administrator should log on to this computer and Windows
will prompt with further instructions: - Definition Update 1.14.1288.5

Please post the section that's similar to the above excerpt, *not the

contains mpas-f.exe.

Rob,

Does the Install folder appear in the
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads folder ?
IF it does, open it. There *should* be a file named mpas-f.exe present.
Right click it, choose Properties. The Modified date should be March 2,
2006. Double click it to install the definitions if the date is correct.

If the Install folder or mpas-f.exe is not present you may need to clear
the contents of the Datastore and Download folders.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/showarticle.aspx?articleid=11&ln=en
NOTE: Clearing the Datastore folder will erase the system's update
history. Suggest clearing the Download folder first and then revisit
Microsoft Update to see if the definition file is offered.

If neither of these does not resolve the issue, try this method
suggested by Torgeir Bakken (MVP)

" If the directory "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network" does not exist, you will get this error.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE% is normally "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users"

To verify existence/create this folder, you can do like this:

Press Start/Run, and fill in this:

"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft"

Press OK, and the Microsoft folder will open.

If no Network folder is found there, create it (File\New --> Folder) "
Revisit MU to see if the update is offered.
