installation and unintstallation of Antivirus software

I was having a problem with Mcafee, so I uninstalled it.
Then after realizing the problem was not mcafee, I tried
to reinstall it, but everytime I make an effort to
perform an update, the update screen fades off, and when
I try to get it back it stalls the program?
