I have just purchased XP Pro for my home computer, to replace 2000 Server
which I had running, and was totaling bogging down my HP machince. It has
been suggested to me that I do a 'clean' install. Does that mean I reformat
the hard drive? Do I create a boot disk first?

Any info or tips would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes... if you are going to complete a "clean install" that would involve you
reformatting the Hard Disk. Backup any information you wish to keep, because
it will be lost after you reformat.

When you install xp it should detect another operating system. it will then
give you the choice of a clean install or an upgrade. Should do anyway. Can
you tell me more about the 'HP' problem?

Thanks for your reply. Will I be prompted to create a boot disk at that time?

In addition to making my PC extremely slow to boot up, it will'lockup'
intermintenly. I contacted HP about upgrading the bios, but they said that
pc did not support Windows Server and suggested I reinstall ME, which it
shipped with.

No, I will be very surprised if you are asked to create a boot disk. XP
really does not use thwm and is being taken over by WinPE but that is only
available to specialists. there is freeeware available called 'BartPe' which
can achieve similar but I don't think either will help you.

Good old HP, the answer to everything is do it our way, and if it isn't what
you want then buy another computer. I would suggest that you build your own
PC next time. It is far easier than you think. It may well be that xp server
is streching your machine abit. Hard to tell without more info.

So, are you saying that after I format the hard drive, XP will boot from the
CD? I don't need a boot disk?

XP should boot to the disk if it is an option setup in you Bios. Make sure
you have the CD Rom as a option to Boot from. It should work. Good Luck!
