I am trying to upgrade from 2000 pro to xp pro. I get to the point in the
install when it restarts the computer the first time. I see the windows load
up screen but then my computer goes to a black screen. I have removed the
hardware that is not needed, I have updated my BIOS, I have run the windows
check within the install to see if my computer is up to the task. None of
these things have fixed my problem. If you have any ideas please let me know.

Check the ram.

Memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/

Windows Memory Diagnostic
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

These will create a bootable CD. Let each one run for a while, not just
one pass.

Also check the hard drive. Download a drive diagnostic utility from the
drive manufacturer's web site. This will create a bootable floppy disk.
Run the diagnostics from there.

Clean the drive. Do a fresh install. Best bet for all around
satisfaction.

I have tried checking ram and the hard drive with neither one giving me any
problems. I would rather not clean the drive since I will loose a lot. Any
other ideas?
