Hi - I am wondering whether I can install Windows 2000
advanced server on my home pc which is currently running
on XP. Ideally, I'd like to have both operating systems
runnning on the same machine but don't want to mess it up
if this is not possible. Can someone please help me how I
can do this.
Thanks

How do I install Windows 2000 after I've installed XP?

(above technique works with Advanced Server as well)

Technically you are supposed to load the oldes OS first
but you can install ADV server second. Once you do this
XP will probably not boot, so you will have to do as
repair install of the XP.

You would need to make a separate partition for each system, and then I
would use an external boot manager that can hide each system from the
other - have a shared partition for data if wanted. I would use BootIT
NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional
trial) which will also do the partitioning

Or Partition Magic 8 and its Boot Magic

Yes but how do I boot from CD? 1st step says boot your
computer from the Win2K CD and continue with the
installation...but how?

Man, are you sure you want to do this? I hope this is just for your own
learning because a sysadmin who doesn't know how to boot from the cd is
a scary thought. Go into your BIOS and set your computer's boot order
to 1) cd-rom; 2) ide0 hard drive; 3) your choice here, usually
removable media (floppy, etc.). Then reboot the machine with the cd in
the drive and after the POST you should get a prompt asking you whether
to boot from the cd or the hdd.

You will need to consult your computer's manual for information on accessing
the System BIOS and how to boot from CD.
