install problem

Glen P.

Doing a fresh install of Win XP Prof. I get as far as the
screen where it tells me 39 mins left to install and the
various features of XP scroll. After some time I get a
fatal error message

"Signature for WinXP Prof setup is invalid. Error Corde
is 80096001. System level error occured while verifying
trust.

Setup failed to install product catalogs. This is a fatal
error. This setup log files should contain more
information."

Where do I go from here?

Glen,

I had this problem too and found the answer at
Microsoft.com in the XP Knowledge base.
Here goes: this behavior may occur if one of the
following conditions is true:
The Catroot2 folder is not correctly deleted during the
installation.
The RAM configuration is not compatible with WinXP.
One or more of the RAM modules on your compputer do not
work correctly.

Resolution:
Follow these steps:
Rename the Catroot2 folder during the installation. To
rename the %WinDir%\System32\Catroot2 folder at a command
prompt, follow these steps:
During setup, and while the error message is displayed,
press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt, type:
cd\windows\system32\ and press ENTER.
Type: rename catroot2 catold
Hit: Enter and restart the computer. Try to finish
the installation again.
This worked for me and hopefully will work for you.
If you cannot get to a command prompt with the F10,
restart the computer into Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt, and
do it from there.
If this doesn't resolve the problem, check your RAM chips
to make sure one or more are not defective.
