install and recovery of Windows XP

I bought myself a new notebook and I'll leave the old one for my children.
The old one didn't have Windows in it and that's why I bought a normal
Windows XP Home.

My new one -Fujitsu siemens came with Windows XP home installed.
With the old notebook I got and still have a normal Windows XP install cd
but with the new one I have something called Recovery CD of Windows XP home
(for FujitsuSiemens only). Its instructions says if something happens I insert
the recovery cd and press F2 and then open the bios and follow the
instrctions....

I've always found good advice in these newsgroups and I want to know
if something happens to my new computer and I need to reinstall the
Windows, can I format and reinstall using the normal install XP cd that came
when I bought Windows for my old computer.I'll type the key for my new one
and will install it.
I ask because the new computer has something like i don't know...special
Fujitsi siemens bios or something like that...Am I allowed to do it.

Could you tell me what is this Recovery CD that needs to installed with the
FS bios?
By the way both CDs are with XP service pack 2.

Thank you very much,Your help is much appreciated!

You will be better off using the Recovery CD than formatting and trying to
install from your full CD for two reasons:

1. The Recovery CD will install the proper drivers, which the other CD
probably does not have.

2. The other CD may refuse the Product ID for the laptop when you try to
install.

IF you want to FORMAT and reinstall XP on the new laptop use the
Recovery cd provided by Fujitsu! Laptops are peculiar and finicky
creatures. Many have proprietary hardware and the proper drivers for
your laptop are on the recovery cd. In essence the Recovery cd will
restore your laptop to factory condition. If you use the XP cd to
reinstall on the laptop you will then have to make sure that all the
right drivers are properly installed, it would be or could be a real
pain! Plus, the XP license will have been activated on the other
machine, so by rights you are not allowed to install it on a second machine.

On the other hand, if you want to fix the installation without formating
the drive you could use the XP cd. Most laptop Recovery cd's have only
one way of reinstalling the operating system, completely wipe the drive
and reinstall the image on the Recovery cd. That too can be a real
pain! Beware these Recovery cd's! If you want to repair the
installation and keep the information on the hard drive a regular XP cd
will be, or might be a better way to go about it.

A. No. The Product Key that came with your new Fujitsu PC will
only work with Fujitsu's Recovery CD.

Yes. You can use your new disk to do an install if needed. Use the CD
key that came with it. The only thing that you might need to do is
reinstall some of your drivers. (If XP doesn't have them) The best
place to get the drivers if you need them is at
http://www.driverguide.com . You can download them yourself, or choose
the ones that you need and DriverGuide will put them on a disk for you
for $1.99. Hope that this helps.

If you look on the recovery CD you should see a folder called i386. This has
the XP files in. You can use this to make a full XP cd if you want. Depends
on how good you are with computers but its not that hard. Its handy for
repair installs and as they are the original files your key will work. I'm
sure if you google you can find full instructions.
