Inserting page numbers in Word 2003

I want to insert page numbers in the lower-right hand corner of my document
(preferably in the Footer). Page one is my title page, so I don't want that
to be a page number. Page two I want to be numbered page 1, page three I want
to be numbered page 2, and so on.

How do I do this?

To: Big,

(1) You need to have a page break between the title page and the following
pages.

Open the header and footer menu (View > Header and Footer).
Toggle between the header and footer.
(2) Toggle off "same as previous" icon.

In the footer section, tab twice to the right side of the page.
(3) Add page number (Alt+Shift+P).

(4) Click on the Format Page Number icon.
Select "start at" and "1"
Close, you should be done.

If the footer shows up on the first page, re-open the Header and Footer menu
bar (just double click on the footer) and make sure that in section 2 you
don't have "same as previous" and then just delete the footer in section 1.

Bascially there are four steps. (1) Add page break between the first and
second page. (2) Toggle off the "same as previous." (3) Add page number to
the footer in the second section. (4) Format the page number to start at 1.

This will work provided you substitute a Next Page *section* break for a
page break. But it isn't necessary. You can accomplish the same thing (in
this specific instance) in either of two other ways.

1. In the Insert | Page Numbers dialog, accept the default settings ("Bottom
of page (Footer)" and "Right") and clear the check box for "Show number on
first page." Then click Format and start numbering at 0. This is fine for
short, simple documents that won't have more than one section.

2. If you prefer to use the Insert Page Number button on the Header and
Footer toolbar to insert the page number directly in the footer (better in
some ways, especially for complex documents), click on the Page Setup button
and check the box for "Different first page." This will give you a separate
First Page Footer, which you leave empty. In the primary Footer, use the
Insert Page Number button to insert the PAGE field. If the page number is
the only thing in the footer, then pressing Ctrl+R to right-align it will be
just as sensible as pressing Tab twice (and more successful if the margins
have been changed and the tab stops not). Then click the Format Page Number
button and start numbering from 0.

I can't seem to figure out the "toggle off the 'same as previous'" step.

Where is this option located?

On the Header and Footer toolbar, move your cursor slowly across the icons,
titles should pop up telling you what they are. You need the "same as
previous" icon. It is just left of the Switch between Header and Footer icon.

Also, at the top right hand corner of the dotted footer box you should see
"Same as Previous." Once you toggle off the "same as Previous" icon, the
words should diisappear.

But it's unavailable unless you have more than one section, which the OP
would not have if he had inserted just a "page break" as you suggested.
