Inserting Excel objects?

Linn Kubler

Hi,

One of my users is experiencing difficulties inserting Excel workbook
objects into PowerPoint. When she selects the workbook and hit's OK
PowerPoint completely crashes and gives the "Do you want to send a report to
Microsoft" dialog box. I don't have access to her computer at the moment so
I'm not sure if there are any event log messages related to the crash yet or
not. It's Office 2003 Standard, any thoughts what might cause this? Her
computer is relatively up to date on patches.

I will be looking at the computer this afternoon and can report back with
more detail if necessary. Just thought I'd get the question out there in
case it is a common problem with an obvious solution.

Thanks in advance,
Linn

It's not common, but it sure never hurts to ask.

I'd probably run Help | Detect and Repair. Then I'd try disabling the
antivirus -- and especially any Office plug-ins it might have (see Norton
Anti-Virus and Office http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00387.htm as an example) --
and see if it still crashes.

Hi Echo,

So I tried a Detect and Repair, both as the user and the administrator,
didn't help. I searched for the file officeav.dll, it doesn't exist.

Further testing showed the following:
The error is from Excel, in PowerPoint I select Insert | Object and create
an object from a file. This generates an error that Excel cannot be
started, asks if you want to send a report to Microsoft and then asks if you
want to start Excel in Safe Mode.

If I open Excel first, before PowerPoint, everything works as expected.
If I login as the domain administrator, everything works as expected.
If I login as another standard domain user, it fails in the same manner.
If I make the domain user a local administrator, it fails in the same
manner.
If I delete one of the standard user's Windows profile and recreat, it fails
in the same manner.

I've run out of ideas. It started to look like a profile corruption isssue
but that didn't pan out either. Any thoughts, ideas or other suggestions?

Oh, I tried the same Excel document on another computer and it worked fine.
Guess it does look like an issue with launching Excel in the background.

Thanks much,
Linn

Sorry, Linn, I've got no other ideas. Maybe time to call MS support?
