Inserting a CD causes instant reboot

C

I have a family member's Windows 2000 Professional installation to
support and the machine instantly reboots (i.e. no BSOD) when *any* CD
or CD-ROM is inserted.

Most of the time the reboot is immediately after the CD is spun up, but
on one or two occasions I've seen the CD actually appear in Explorer
and let me browse it for about 30 seconds before the reboot occurs.

I've reinstalled the CD-ROM drivers using the device manager, it seemed
to do so from an on-disk copy as it didn't find an update online.

The Windows 2000 installation is fully service packed and Windows
Updated.

Since this is remote machine (to me) I'd like to explore software
problems before getting the machine brought to me for me to try
swapping out the CD-ROM drive.

Any thoughts?

TIA

Could be a faulty CD drive or a marginal power supply.
Both are easy to swap.

I had the extact same problem and after trying a new CD drive found it
to be a marginal power suppy.
