insert line break in a heading

I'm trying to create a custom numbered heading and I need the number to be on
one line, and the text to follow below. similar to what I have below, yet
right-aligned.
1
Heading Text
2
Heading Text

etc.

I need this for the Heading 1 style and I cannot simply add it after the
style is applied by shift + enter. I tried shift + enter in Styles Formating

Heading 1 > Format > Numbering > Customize > and adding a shift + enter

break after the number in the Number format field. But, this adds a white box
that I cant get rid of.

Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, a line break is not one of the options for separating the
number and text (the only options are Space, Tab, and Nothing); your only
recourse is to insert it manually. You might, however, see the examples in
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm, which illustrate how to use
two separate styles for the heading number and heading text (and still have
numbered TOC entries).

Why can't you use Shift+Enter? That's what Shift+Enter is for (among other
reasons). Does it cause some kind of conflict or other problem?

Thank you both.

Yes, Shift + enter inserts a square symbol between the chapter number and
title. I've tried to accept the square tried to hide it by applying the same
color blue as the background. Yet, this causes the number to turn blue as
well.

Does this symbol print? Is it displayed even when you have nonprinting
characters hidden?

I would still recommend using two separate styles (see my previous post).

I wonder if this is an artifact of the font you're using. Try Suzanne's
suggestion of toggling off the display of non-printing characters
(Ctrl+Shift+*/8). If the character disappears, then it's a non-printing
indicator (in Arial/Times New Roman, it usually displays somewhat
differently from what you describe)--but won't cause problems when the
document is printed.
