Inplace anytime upgrade disabled after SP1

I installed the SP1 Release Candidate and a few days later bought the
anytime upgrade from premium to ultimate.
I had to install Ultimate to another hard drive as Upgrade was not an
available option.
Earlier today something happened to this new install and I can't boot into
it. But that's another story.
I can still boot into my original Premium installation as I didn't get rid
of it yet.
So I try the upgrade process again and still can't do an upgrade in place.
However, I uninstalled the SP1 and now I can do the in place anytime
upgrade.
Which I will now complete, and hope it all goes well.

With the release candidate Microsoft is saying that the product is almost
ready but still has bugs. Not surprised that there are still issues. Wait
until they formally release the SP1 and hopefully things will get better.

That would make sense. If you have applied SP1, then you have a "newer"
version of Vista than the Anytime Upgrade version, so it refused to install.
Sounds like correct, if unexpected, behaviour to me.

It's probably a bit like XP, where you couldn't upgrade from Home SP2 to Pro
SP1 for example. As the Vista DVDs have no embedded SP1, trying to do such
an upgrade will fail. I expect it would work with a Vista SP1 integrated
DVD.
