The "sleep" function seldom works. Instead, the PC initially shuts down but
then restarts within a few seconds. Any suggestions?

Probably some hardware set to wake the computer - like wireless card,
network adaptor etc. Check the power options for your hardware devices

Hi, go into ---- control panel/device manager/net adapters/click on NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller then click on power management tab UNCHECK allow this device to wake the computer. This should take care of the problem. I got this from HP.

My PC went to sleep, but it wasn't 100% reliable. Occasionally, I'd come
in next morning and the PC would be on.

I also noticed that, during normal use, my mouse pointer very very
occasionally shoots to the corner of the screen. It happens maybe once a
day. So, I removed the mouse's ability (in ControlPanel,Device Manager)
to wake up the computer and I haven't had my PC awake by itself since.

I have had a similar problem, it intermittantly restarts itself and many
times it appears to have shut down but all the system fans are still
running. I finally dumped it an went with "shut down" instead.

If you haven't already, try...

#1 - Change USB Settings:

1. Open Power Settings, choose the plan you have selected
2. Click change plan settings
3. Click change advanced power setting
4. Enable the setting under USB settings->USB slective suspend setting

#2 - Change Multimeda Settings:

If any of you are on a home network and/or have a media center extender, go
to Multimedia Settings (under advanced power settings)

1. Clik Multimedia settings
2. When sharing media, choose "Allow the computer to sleep"

#3 - Change Network and Sharing Center Settings:

1. From the Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Center
2. Click Manage network connections
3. Select your LAN or Local Area Connection
4. Click Properties
5. Click Configure
6. Select tab, Power Management
7. Deselect "Allow this device to wake the computer"

I am one who also has the Vista sleep problem. Have tried all the settings
I know of in Power Options, Device Manager, etc. checked/unchecked. etc;
(including the ones mentioned below); still a problem. For a while it would
not *go* to sleep; now it goes to sleep but on awakening freezes the screen
and gives the BSOD after about five minutes of freeze. Thanks anyway...
