Initialising usb wi-fi adaptor

Hi.
My system is a shuttle SN41g2 (XPhome+SP2) which I network with a
D-link DWL-G122 USB wi-fi adaptor. This was installed using the
supplied driver, which is the same as the latest wone on D-link's web
site. When I boot up it is not set up. No LEDs come on, the network
connection is shown as unavailable, and ipconfig shows no results from
a DHCP request.

During the login process the link light comes on briefly, and there is
one short flash from the activity light. The lights never respond
again once the XP desktop is displayed.

If I unplug it and plug it in again it bursts into life, and works
thereafter until I next reboot.

I am confident that the adaptor works. The machine dual-boots Linux,
and in Suse 10.0, or in Ubuntu booted from a live disk, it works
straight away without bother.

It seems to me that the simplest solution would be to add something to
my XP menu-startup that re-initialises it in software during the login
process. Can anyone suggest a simple method of doing this that I can
add to a .bat file?

No thoughts then?
