Initial Password

My 8 year old son somehow created a password on his new computer and he does
not know how he did it. Therefore, he cannot log onto his computer at all.
He has Windows XP Home Edition. We were told to do F10 but it didn't work.
I am trying to get step by step instrucation how to override the password.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Restart the computer and start hitting the F8 key.
Continue hitting the F8 key until you see the Windows Advanced
Options menu.
Use the up arrow key to select Safe Mode.
Hit enter and hold down the Shift key.
This should bring up the Welcome Screen.
Click on the Administrator icon.
Once you've logged on, go to Control Panel and double click
User Accounts.
Click on the icon for your sons account.
You should now be able to remove the password.

Here's an article that explains the procedure:
How to log on to Windows XP if you forget your password or your
password expires
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305/EN-US/

If this procedure doesn't solve your problem, you may have to
use one of the tools mentioned in this article:

How can I gain access to a Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 computer if
I forgot the administrator's password?
http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

Here's the one that I see recommended the most:

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

Good luck

Chances are that his administrator password is blank.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice in succession when logging
on, then log on as administrator with a blank password.
This will enable you to change your son's password
via Start / Control Panel / User Accounts. I recommend
you use this opportunity to create an account for yourself
so that you never again end up in this awkward situation.

Almost forgot, if this password request is displayed when he
first starts his computer, he may have set up a BIOS password.
The procedure to remove this password will be different
depending on the system. Consult the manual that came with your
system or search the manufacturer's support site for more info.

If it turns out that it's a BIOS password you're trying to
remove, post back with the make and model number of your son's
computer.

Good luck
