info needed re: microtek smII-tpo device

i found an old microtek scanner IIhr - model# mrs1200zs and there was what
looked to be a half of another scanner with it. it had the number:
smII-tpo and said to be used with IIhr.

what is this thing and what's it used for? scanning double sided pages?
transparencies? adding more light? googling didn't come up with anything.
