microtek scanmaker 35Tplus help requested

I was given a Microtek Scanmaker 35T plus. I didn't get any cables or
software. I was assured that it worked and saw some nice scans.
I have an older PC running Win 98 that I can dedicate to this scanner.
-I downloaded the software from microtek.
-connected a cable from the printer port of the PC to the printer port of
the scanner.
-I tried a serial cable from the printer port on the PC to the serial port
on the scanner
- I can not get the PC to recognize the machine, although I get a solid
ready light and it looks like the scanner is trying.
-I noticed that there was a button on the back that changed numbers. I don't
know what that does.
- I have read a posts about a SCSI card, but I don't know what that is or
how to tell if my PC has one.

Any help in getting this up and running would be appreciated.

Yes, that is a SCSI scanner.
The button/numbers on the back set the SCSI ID number (you can daisy
chain 7 SCSI devices together).
On the unlikely chance you have a SCSI card in your computer, a quick
look in Device Mananger would show it under SCSI Controllers section.

Yes, the 35t+ scanner is a SCSI scanner. It will NOT work on a serial port
or parallel port. The Adaptec 2906 would be a good PCI SCSI card for it, and
you need a SCSI cable too. Should find some on Ebay. There are different
SCSI cables with different types of connectors, and you of course need one
with connectors to fit your SCSI card and scanner.

The switch that changes numbers changes the SCSI ID number and you can use
any number (except 7) if you have no other SCSI devices on the SCSI card.
The idea is that all SCSI devices must have a unique number.

If you have Windows XP, you need ScanWizard 2.60.

See http://www.support.microtek.com/product_dtl_2.phtml?prod_id=dsc024&ctgy=7

Those installation instructions are about the 1502 ISA SCSI card that came
with it. The PCI card is easier, just plug it in and Windows has the driver
for the 2906.
