INFO: HELP! primary IDE slave not seen by XP Pro

Anyone have any pointers for me? Here is my original configuration which I
built and has never had a problem.

Original working config.
Primary IDE
Master - Maxtor 40gig drive
Slave - None
Secondary IDE
Master - Lite-on CD-R
Slave - Lite-on DVD

When I gave my system a Christmas present, every device I put as a slave in
the primary IDE (Quantum 40gig drive, Lite-on CD-R, Lite-on DVD) is
correctly seen in the BIOS but not in the OS - XP Professional. I cannot
find anything in MSDN or in any searches in MSN, Google, Lycos, etc.
pertaining to this problem. Does anyone have any intelegent feedback other
then "did you check you jumper settings", and, "bla, bla BIOS setup". Yes,
yes, and yes! Sorry for the sarcasm, that came from some dealing with some
lame forums.

Here is what I have left it as for now according to the BIOS even though the
OS still doesn't see the DVD

New not working config.
Primary IDE
Master - Maxtor 40gig drive
Slave - Lite-on DVD
Secondary IDE
Master - Quantum 40gig drive
Slave - Lite-on CD-R

Thank you in advance for any help you may offer.

Set your Bios IDE settings to "Auto"
Set Device jumpers to Cable Select.

After XP Loads run the Add Hardware in Device Manager if it does not show.

Try a new ide cable (80 wire)

Hi, Ross.

In that whole tale of woe, you never once mentioned Disk Management. What
does it tell you?

Remember in the olden days we had to boot from a DOS floppy and run FDISK to
partition the new HD, then Format.exe to format it? In Win2K and later, we
run Disk Management, a built-in utility (MS calls it a snap-in to the
Microsoft Management Console). The quickest way to find it is to type at
the Run prompt: diskmgmt.msc

Use Disk Management to create at least one partition and assign it a drive
letter. Until then it cannot appear in Device Manager or My Computer. Once
it has a drive letter, you can format it and use it.

Disk management doesn't see anything I put in the primary slave position.
Right now I have the new HD as a secondary master and it sees it and it has
been partitioned and formated. Right now I have my DVD as the primary slave
and it is not seen.

Ideal not working config.

Hi, Ross.

Sure sounds like that primary cable is bad, doesn't it?

Have you tried switching cables? Have you followed RonK's suggestions?

yep, every thing that a half way computer smart person (that is all I clame
to be) can figure out has been checked. I had one regular IDE cable and one
newer 80 pin. after swapping them I had the same results. Thank you for your
responce though. I do appriciate it.

are you sure it is not seen? you go into device manager and under hard
drives it is not seen?
but on boot it is seen?

if that is the case play with master slave setting vs. cable select whatever
you are doing try the other!

Thank you one and all,
I finally figured it out, in Device manager inder IDE the primary device 1
was set to none rather than auto.
GO FIGURE!

Hi, Ross.

In DEVICE MANAGER? Wow! I never would have thought of that one! In the
BIOS, sure, but Device Manager??

Thanks for the report. And Congratulations!

Try this. Hook up your two drives as cable select on the primary controller. The ide cable has a master connection and slave connection. Hook up appropriately. Also set in bios of both drives. On your secondary ide controler set your burning hardware as a master and the other, the player as a slave. This is my setup. However, my second drive was formatted but the software was not installed. I use this one for storage. If you need any help go to one of the computer superstores with tech support. They helped me. good luck. John

this may sound a little off the wall, something nobody thinks about... but..
Try switching IDE controllers.. IF the computer recognises the drive on IDE2
then replace your power supply, and dont go with the cheapie, spend the bux,
I have a new 400 W power supply with dual cooling fans.
I was having a problem like yours.. after frying 3 hard drives, the tech
checked the CD burner (the device not being recognised) on an other machine,
with no problems. I replaced the power supply and no problems since.

SOLUTION FOUND!

I was messing around in the "Device Manager" and went to the "IDE ATA/ATAPI
controllers" then again to the "Primary IDE Channel" In that properties
window there was an "Advanced Settings" tab which has 2 sections - Device 0
and Device 1. Device 1 (Primary slave) was set to none for some reason. It
must have been set to that durring instalation since there was no slave at
that time? Anyway, I set it to "Auto Detection" any my broblems were taken
care of and now both my BIOS and OS read:
____________________
Primary IDE
Master - Maxtor 40gig drive
Slave - WD 40gig drive
Secondary IDE
Master - Lite-on CD-R
Slave - Lite-on DVD

Thank you everyone who tried to help. I figured this one out while I was
helping a friend with a simular problem in his secondary IDE with a new
DVD-R and the same OS. I hope the people that read this can easily help
others with this same problem now. It looks like XP can shut off unused
positions on either IDE if emply durring the OS instalation. Or at least
that is what it looks like to me.
