Only one of my two DVD drives will work on a new install of XP

Hello all
I purchased parts and built a new PC and am reinstalling XP prior to Windows
7.
Did this as I wanted to get everything correct before moving into unfamiliar
territory.
Problem - Bios regonizes both my ATAPI DVD drives and lets me use both for
installing OS. But once windows is on it will not let the Lite-on DVD drive
work.
Hardware manager calls it an ATAPI SCSI CdRom drive for some reason. No
amount of uninstalling drivers helps, it always comes back as the same SCSI
drive which it is not. This drive is a burner the other a ROM. I have swapped
master to slave and back again with no better result. The other drive works
as master or slave. Drive works perfectly in old machine with a prexisting
install just will not work in my new machine with XP. Fine with BIOS and
installing OS.
I have tried the upper lower filter fix, only to be told by that fix it was
not the problem.
Can anyone help here.
New machine is a SATA machine with just one IDE plug.
Thanks Steve

Steve, did you look in Device Manager? See if both drives are
showing up? Does the drive work ok when installed by itself? Try a
different Ribbon Cable?

Hello Rich Barry

Thanks for your reply.
I was onto that one as well and I changed cables early on.
After changing the cable the BIOS did recognize the other drive differently
in as much as the BIOS orginally called the other drive a SCSI in the BIOS
listing now it says ATAPI for both.
Both drives appear in Hardware manager that is how removed then reinstalled
drivers.
Is it possible that the cable was the problem in the first place and now
Windows just will not see the drives any other way?

I did try it on its own and it did not work with windows.
With BIOS no trouble.

Steve, you did say that the drive works fine in another computer?
If that's the case, what motherboard are you using?

Thanks again R Barry

The MoBo is Gigabyte GA EP45T-UD3R.
Drive works perfectly in another XP computer.
I used this drive to install the OS in this new machine It fires up on basic
Drivers from MoBo BIOS to do that.
Once OS installed it just will not read pre-recorded discs of any type and I
cannot get any Properties from the drive in Windows explorer.
Hardware manager tells me it is installed and running fine.
I am talking to Gigabyte Tech support as well Lite-on support. Have not got
any new info here though.
I will reinstall XP today to see if with the changed cable it is any better,
as it was swapped after the OS install but I just do not see how that will
help really????

Hello again R Barry

I took a punt on it being a quirk with the Lite-on drive even though I know
it works fine and purchased a new LG drive.
It works fine.
Whatever is the issue it has been cast aside with the new drive and I will
be able to use the Lite-on somehow somewhere else.
Thanks again R Barry I am stumped.

I am thinking somehow with the old cable windows installed it badly and for
whatever reason the drivers used could not be freed up from the bad install.
Rather than do a complete reinstall it is just easier to change brands.
Gigabyte and lite-on were helping I cannot fault them either.

Steve, awhile back I had two Lite On CDR drives go flaky in a very
short time so I stick with LG now.
