Infinite loop in installation

About 45 minutes into the installation of an upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro,
the setup procedure displays the error message: "unregmp2.exe - Entry point
not found. The procedure entry point SetIUMS could not be located in the DLL
MSDARD.DLL"

You can click on the 'ok' button of this message until you die of old age,
it keeps coming back. The only way out is to power off. Whenever the
computer is powered back on, it boots into setup and proceeds to work its way
back to the same error message.

All I have to do is boot from something other than the C: drive, but all I
have is an
external USB optical drive that is not an option in the BIOS.

So, surely there is some way to interrupt the setup to get a DOS prompt so I
can
edit the BOOT.INI to boot off the USB drive, but I do not know what it is.
I would rather not replace the broken internal optical drive just to escape
from
this install bug.

Any help would be appreciated.

When the problem occurs, press Shift + F10 to bring up the
command prompt. Then type taskmgr.exe in the DOS window
and press Enter. The Task Manager should be started. If
not, try to press C+Shift+ESC. In the Task Manager
program, select the error messsage window in the
application list and click "End Task". In the process
list, terminate the unregmp2.exe program. Exit the DOS
prompt window and resume the installation process.

Awesome.

This solution worked very well. Setup completed and all of my settings
and installed programs remained intact after the upgrade.

Is the 'shift-F10' key combination particular to setup?
Is there a general source where I can learn more about key combinations?

Thank You.
