inetinfo.exe bogging down server

Mike Reynolds

We are having a problem with inetinfo.exe bogging down our
server. There is an apparent memory leak because its
memory usage overtime is increasing rapidly. We also
experiencing a TON of mail in the SMTP queue. Routing is
shut down.

Anyone have any ideas on how to stop the memory leak and
clear the queue?

Thanks!

sounds highly suspicous ... check your AV updates!

Does it matter?

Sorry, that's a bit abrupt. I would fix the problem first, then about
what it is afterwards. But *many* viruses come with an SMTP engine and
it could be any one of them. I presume that your mail server is set up
to trust all LAN SMTP? So it could be another machine flooding your
mail server. If one or more of the workstations on the LAN or WAN is
infected it could be bombarding your mail server with virus or SPAM
emails from inside. Have you looked at the emails in the mail queue?

I would isolate the mail server (ie remove all machines from the mail
servers segment and remove any connections to anywhere else internal
and see if the problem is resolved. If it is, the problem is on
another machine. If it isn't it's the mailserver. I'd remove it from
the network, get the latest AV updates *on another machine* and run a
floppy based scan of the machine. I'd get all the latest patches from
Microsoft *on another machine* and I would apply them offline.

If it's not the server, and you don't have too many machines, I'd take
them all offline and patch and check them one by one.

Cheers,

Cliff
