indexes/references

My office publishes a book each year for student elective options. We'd like
the footer of each section to contain the title of the section and have this
information automatically derived from an existing index or bookmark. Is
this possible?

Some sample sections are Anesthesiology and Biochemistry.

Last year, someone manually typed in the names of the sections in the
footers but when the sections repaginated, they got all messed up and the
book printed odly.
