Index Question

Dear Friends,
I am creating an index for a long document. If I understand correctly I add
an index entry and word will create an index automatically when I am
finished
with a reference to where that entry is in the final document, i.e. the page
number. However what I would prefer is that it refer to a chapter and
section number. I use a "chapter style" at the beginning of each chapter and
each section has a heading "section 1, section 2 etc". How can I have word
create the based on my chapters and sections and not on page numbers?

Before anyone gives you the answer to your question I'm gonna be Devil's
Advocate here and urge you to reconsider doing so.

An Index is intended to quickly & accurately direct the reader to a specific
location within the doc, making it easy to find. Anyone not intimately
familiar with the chapter & section order of the doc will have to waste a
lot of time flipping pages to find what their looking for... Not to mention
that the section may be several pages long & the index would only get the
reader 'close' at best.

Also, including Chapter & Section info in the index gets a bit lengthy for
any entries that occur in multiple locations within the doc - again,
detracting from the readability & usability of what is intended to be a
helpful feature.

Please accept the observtions in the manner intended

Thank you for the reply.

Word version: 2007


The book I am working on is a religious MSS. The pages are very large with a
great deal of text on each page. However the page itself is broken up into
many sections (with a heading) so the reader will find the section faster
through this method.

DO you know and resources that could help me with this? Tutorials especially
on Word indexing?
