How can I place endnotes before my book index?

I need to reposition endnotes to precede my biblio and index - I converted
all referential footnotes to endnotes (227 of them). Word 2003 sends them to
the back of my document in a format that doesn't permit any subsequent breaks
or section insertions.
However, since I want to publish this as a book, I need the endnotes to
precede other sections such as biblio and index. (I tried placing the
endnotes at the end of the relevant sections -- my second choice -- but of
course Word in its usual inscrutable fashion bunched them all up in just one
or two sections instead of where they belonged).

Who's making you use endnotes? Footnotes are much easier for the
reader (and for Word, too ...).

It's personal preference. I'm leaving explanatory footnotes where they are
and just converting the referential footnotes into endnotes. There are an
awful lot of them to leave at the bottom of the pages (227). Makes for a
longer book, too.

sections have the "SUPPRESS ENDNOTES" checked and others do not, but they are
all grayed out. I tried changing some of the other options on the page but
the suppress checkbox never became accesible.

Any suggestions?????

Have you changed the placement option from "End of document" to "End of
section"?

O.K. I am replying here at the bottom of the que so it will be easier to
find. As I mentioned above, I verified my FILE / Page Setup / Layout and

I also opened a number of existing documents with multiple sections, and
found that SUPPRESS ENDNOTES was grayed out on all of them, no matter which
doc or section I tried.

So I went to another laptop (both are running Word 2003 w/VISTA) and found
exactly the same thing. Why is Word not letting me access this function? Some
are checked and some are not, but all are grayed out.

Suzanne,

That worked! What was confusing to me was that the option was grayed out on
both computers and also in documents created by others (as well as new docs I
created to test it). I had thought it would be unique to each document, but
it must be an option retained in Word itself.

A suggestion for those who may come along later: I was not able to apply
SUPPRESS universally; i.e., "Whole document" or "This point forward." I had
to work through the document section by section kind of like herding the
endnotes toward the back. Another thing to be aware of, if I placed my cursor
in the middle of a section to change the PAGE SETUP options, squirrely things
sometimes happened. So I turned on SHOW/HIDE and was careful to place my
insertion point just before the section mark at the end of each section and
that seemed to work fine.

BTW, Suzanne, I'm in Lillian -- small world! Thanks much for your help and
all of the time you put in to make this community of Word users viable. This
is probably the best part of the MS Word experience, the dedicated MVPs.
Lotus WordPro is my regular word processor -- even more than a decade after
being abandoned by its designer, it's still light years ahead of MS Word in
many areas of usability (my opinion, of course).

Glad you got it sorted. I was kind of shooting in the dark there because I
haven't actually used this option, but I thought I remembered that oddity
about the way it works.

And thanks for the kind words. That kind of response helps to offset the
whining from users who blast Word without making an effort to learn how to
use it--and then blast those who are trying to help because they provide an
answer that is not what they want to hear!
