Indexer keeps crashing on Vista - Event 7031 on SearchIndexer.exe

The indexer on Vista is repeatedly crashing - in fact, it won't start up at
all. As a first shot, I've logged all the information I can find in the hope
it gets indexed. So far, the only report I can find of similar problems is
in Chinese and from a beta build of Vista. More later

"Microsoft Windows Search Indexer has stopped working"
Event ID: 7031
OS: Vista Ultimate

My Search Indexer crashed after I had a crash with an audio. I had a bad
sound card driver. I ended up doing a re-install. You can turn it off in
Services so it won't keep popping up. I found some others having this
problem. Just do a search on Search Indexer and there are a couple of other
reports. No fixes that I can find.

I've had the same problem. It started about 2 days ago and it constantly
crashes. Unfortunately I don't have any of the logs or info about the
problem with me.
I know it is preventing me from opening Outlook 2007 (if I start in safe
mode it's ok, normal mode locks). Ever since the crashing started I also
cannot copy files across my network, it will again lock if I attempt it. I
hope this is something fixable...

You can disable Windows Search in the Services console. That will allow you
to run any programs. It just won't keep a updated list of the files on your
comoputer so when you do a file search it may be slower. I could not find a
fix other than what I just described so I ended up formatting C: and
re-installing. I couldn't deal with my 2 day old vista installation being
broke. I didn't put my audio driver back on and I have run perfectly for a
week now.
